As the NBA season nears its debut, NBA Primetime’s Brandon Ribak breaks down the top players destined for a breakout this season.

 

J.J. Hickson (PF, CLE)

Last season, J.J. Hickson posted 8.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in just 20.9 minutes per contest. With LeBron James not around, Hickson should be provided with plenty of minutes per game, giving him an opportunity to average close to a double-double every night.

At the age of 22, Hickson has potential to be a top candidate for the Most Improved Player of the Year Award, especially if he can remain healthy and produce with the ample amount of playing time given.

 

Anthony Randolph (PF/C, NYK)

The 6’11″ 21-year-old was a top name on this list just one season ago, but after playing just 33 regular season games and averaging a mere 22.7 MPG (due to Don Nelson) the athletic power forward is getting the chance to make up for lost time in the New York Knicks' run-and-gun system.

Randolph has extreme upside, and has the arsenal to average a double-double on a nightly basis along with over a steal and block per game.

If Randolph can log starters minutes on a consistent basis, the young gun is capable of posting eye-popping statistics.

Lopez will look to build upon his sophomore season averages of 18.8 PPG, 8.7 RPG and 1.7 BPG. Centers that can score, rebound and defend efficiently are a rare commodity in the NBA and at the age of just 22, Lopez has the ability to emerge as a top two center in the league.

Considering that he has yet to miss a game throughout his two-year career, with career shooting averages of 51.5 percent from the field and 81.0 percent from the charity stripe, Lopez has all the weapons necessary to emerge as an All-Star this season.

 

Jrue Holiday (PG, PHI)

In only 24.2 MPG last season, 20-year-old Jrue Holiday averaged 8.0 points, 3.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Holiday will enter the upcoming season as the Sixers’ starting point guard, signaling that the former UCLA Bruin should be in for a breakout year.

We can expect Holiday to become a top leader in steals per game, along with an above average assist rate.

 

Robin Lopez (C, PHX)

With Amar'e Stoudemire out of the picture, Robin Lopez will be leaned upon to log heavy minutes for Phoenix at the center position.

The Nets, considered by many as the summer's free agency darkhorse, landed none of the big names (neither did the Clippers, but everyone expected that).

So when Carmelo Anthony "didn't" ask for a trade, the Nets naturally made a play for him. A four-way deal feel through at the 11th hour, thanks to a classic balking performance by Denver's front office.

With a new collective bargaining agreement approaching (whether by love or lockout remains to be seen), no team has a clue what kind of financial flexibility they'll have in Summer 2011. That being said, my initial thoughts over the collapsed 'Melo-to-Jersey deal went something like this:

"'Melo was their Plan B that slipped away, and there is no Plan C. They're screwed."

But they're not nearly as bad off without 'Melo as the Knicks will be. That was my second impression, dawning on me as word continued to leak that New York was Anthony's ultimate destination of choice.

At first, I couldn't decide who needed him more, what with New York already having snagged Stoudemire, and the Nets facing a move to Brooklyn without a franchise guy (I do think Brook Lopez can get there, though).

The more I thought about it, though, the more I felt the Knicks needed 'Melo. To be sure, and perhaps to give my own naggings better words, I asked my highly qualified associates (a.k.a. my buddies) what they thought.

Devin voiced my feelings perfectly via text message:

"Knicks. They hv too much riding on Amare n da city. It's more emotional for them. No one expects da nets to be good yet."

Bingo.

The Nets have an apathetic fan base that has zero expectations; moving to Brooklyn in two years plays a huge part in that. Even if they weren't relocating, there's no onus from fans to focus on winning now.

New York has no such luxury. Not only did they underwhelm with the signings of Stoudemire and Raymond Felton, they also don't feature near the youthful talent the Nets boast with Derrick Favors, Brook Lopez, and Devin Harris.

That and the Nets hold the rights to their own draft picks. The Knicks don't, having loaned them all out for last summer's Lebronathon.

We saw how well that worked out.

New Yorkers are obviously less than pleased with the returns of putting all their eggs in the free-agent basket, only to yield one many consider flawed. They put up with two years of inexcusable awful basketball while being told, "It'll be worth it in 2010."

They helplessly found out that wasn't the case. Now they potentially face another era with an almost-good-but-not-great big man and an underwhelming supporting cast.

'Melo would be a great rebound after such disappointment. Fans have to feel giddy knowing there's someone who can and wants to salvage the Knicks. Again, there's no certainty concerning free agents or cap space with a probable hard cap looming, however.

That leaves a trade, except the Knicks don't have any draft picks or young talent they're willing to give up.

That leaves the Knicks with just Stoudemire, who makes them better, but not good enough to contend. That's actually a worse situation than before. When the Knicks finally get to keep some of their draft picks, they'll be mid first-rounders rather than cheap, potential franchise guys like Derrick Rose or John Wall.

In other words, they'll be stuck somewhere between mediocre and subpar.

Knicks' fans didn't suffer through a whole decade of that only to endure more. New York's brass is only too aware of this. They've heard and will continue to hear the backlash from fans, fans who are angry their tried faith looks to go mostly unrewarded.

The Knicks' need 'Melo to take off that burden, one Amar'e can't lift alone.

It's 'Melo or bust, and the clock is ticking.

There was hardly a breather between LeBron James' "Decision" and the saga that surrounds disgruntled Denver star Carmelo Anthony. Yet after months of speculation about the level of his discontent, it has finally been established that the Nuggets are listening to offers for the three-time, All-Star small forward after he has left their three-year, $65 million extension offer unsigned for months.

This is no free-agent process. It's a potential trade that comes with a long list of moving parts, competing agendas and enough number-crunching to wear out even the best capologists. There is one elementary element of this equation, however, that matters above the rest: the young talent.

According to numerous league sources, the Nuggets' main focus in trade talks is on the quality of the young player being offered who -- as the request goes -- is still playing under his rookie scale contract. First-round draft picks are on the wish list, too, with the Nuggets refusing to go too far backward and looking for that new, younger core in return for Anthony.

With that in mind, we look at a few potential destinations for Anthony and discuss each team's respective willingness to part ways with those prized assets. But first, a quick recap of the fluid situation.

The Nets are reportedly the frontrunners (more on that later). But Anthony's preference is to be traded to New York or Chicago and subsequently sign the same extension he has resisted agreeing to with the Nuggets. Those are hardly the only suitors, though. and to know the youthful assets of each team is to know which ones have the most legitimate chance.
