New York – A day after dismantling the Atlanta Hawks, the Chauncey Billups-less New York Knicks traveled back to Madison Square Garden to take on the Utah Jazz. The Knicks scored a season high 131 points on the way to blowing out the Jazz 131-109.

The Knicks made quick work of their opponent and were never really threatened as the Jazz managed to hold their only lead of the game for only one minute and 10 seconds early in the first quarter.

Carmelo Anthony led the Knicks with 34 points on 12 of 16 shooting from the field, and four for five from beyond the arc, as well as three rebounds, five assists and a steal. Amar’e Stoudemire wasn’t far behind with 31 points of his own. He shot 12 of 15 from the field with four rebounds and four blocks. The Jazz were led by the game-high 36 points and 12 rebounds from Al Jefferson and 16 points and eight rebounds from rookie Derrick Favors.

The first five minutes of the 1st quarter were the most competitive with three lead changes. After the Knicks won the opening tip-off, Landry Fields drew a foul and then sank two free-throws to give the Knicks their first lead of the game 2-0. Seventeen seconds later Al Jefferson evened the score at 2-2.

After Devin Harris drew an offensive foul and Andrei Kirilenko put up a layup, the Jazz took their first lead of the game 4-2. A Toney Douglas 3-pointer brought the lead back to New York at 5-4. At the 10:18 mark, an Al Jefferson layup put the Jazz up 6-5, their final lead of the game.

Anthony’s first two points of the came from the charity stripe after a Paul Millsap foul. A Jefferson jumper brought the Jazz to within one, but that would be the closest they'd come the rest of the way. The next two points came from Amar’e Stoudemire 19-footer, on an Anthony assist, then Anthony himself drove in for a layup.

With the Knicks leading 18-10, the Knicks went on 20-10 run with Stoudemire scoring 8 of the 18 points and Anthony adding five. The first quarter came to a close with the Knicks leading the Jazz 40 - 24.

The Jazz played a more respectable game in the 2nd quarter, but that wasn't reflected by the 66-48 score at half-time. Whether that was the result of trying to incorporate Harris and Derrick Favors into their offense and/or playing with a new head coach in Tyrone Corbin (2-8 as head coach), the team is simply not playing the way it had been under Jerry Sloan.

Stoudemire and Anthony highlighted the 3rd quarter by scoring 27 of the Knicks 36 points (14 and 13 points, respectively).

The 4th quarter was basically 12 minutes of garbage time. It was then that the Knicks fans started chanting the names of their team’s bench players—none getting more cheers than Andy Rautins’ lone make on a 19-footer from Shelden Williams.

With the win, the Knicks edge closer to the 5th playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Jazz, on the other hand, lost ground in their pursuit of the 8th spot in the Western Conference playoff standings.

The Knicks will travel to Memphis to take on the Grizzlies tomorrow night.

In The Works today, we break down our first two NBA Mid-Majors and delve into the unconscious of Rudy Fernandez.

But first, a brief history of Amar'e Stoudmire at center.

Matrix Unloaded

It turns out that New York's amazing power forward acquisition -- maxed out Amar'e Stoudemire -- might be New York's amazing center acquisition after all. The entire preseason, coach Mike D'Antoni has played Stoudemire at PF next to one of the roster's two true centers: Ronny Turiaf or Timofey Mozgov. It hasn't worked, because Howard Beck of the New York Times reports Amar'e could very well line up in the middle come opening night, with Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari (two true small forwards) with him in the frontcourt and Raymond Felton and Roger Mason in the backcourt.

Sound familiar? It shouldn't, because D'Antoni never had a regular lineup that meek in Phoenix. There are two central issues at play here, at least in the context of this lineup experimentation happening in New York, where David Lee manned the middle in recent years.

The first is the difference between Stoudemire and Lee, and how the team's identity changes with what is essentially a one-for-one swap of the two. But perhaps more importantly, given that it's D'Antoni at the wheel and Amar'e in the front seat, the question of comparison between Chandler and mid-decade Shawn Marion looms largely.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Take a look at the point guards on America's roster. Chauncey Billups, Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose combine for six NBA All-Star appearances. Russell Westbrook, Eric Gordon and Stephen Curry aren't too shabby either. Neither is Tyreke Evans, although he wouldn't be eligible for a 6-4 and under league due to being 6-6.

As for post players, Team USA used to be deep, and that was even after all 12 Olympians from the gold-medal winning 2008 team were ruled out. But in the past week LaMarcus Aldridge, Al Jefferson, Amar'e Stoudemire, Robin Lopez and David Lee have all been eliminated from consideration for the World Championships, Aug. 28-Sept. 12 in Turkey.

Golden State's Lee, hurt a tendon in his middle right finger on the first day of training camp here Tuesday. After flying back to California to see a Warriors doctor on Wednesday morning, he was ruled out of Team USA activities for the rest of the summer due to a what is termed a mallet finger.

The big blow for Team USA was Stoudemire, a five-time All-Star who would have been the most decorated player on the team. But Stoudemire was shelved just before the first practice after his New York Knicks couldn't get the proper insurance on him and pulled him out.

Stoudemire did acknowledge to FanHouse that "it's a little tough'' not being able to play. But he said the Knicks have told him not to discuss the situation.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Note: Also seen at Protect the Paint.

The Minnesota Timberwolves find themselves at an interesting fork in the road, and judging by June's draft in which they took point guards with both the fifth and the sixth picks, one they anticipated all along.

If you haven't heard, Spanish teen-ager Ricky Rubio (AKA "Mozart") has signed a deal with Barcelona that could keep him in Spain and out of the NBA for the next two seasons.

He could wait a couple years for Rubio to join the squad, which might not be the worst thing in the world. He won't turn 19 until late October. In a couple years with more experience under his belt, he'd likely be in a better spot both physically and in terms of maturity to live up to the hype.

If Rubio is destined to be an NBA star, the realization of that fate seems more likely later than now.

But is this more a question of better location (than the land of 10,000 lakes) leading to bigger dollars?

Prior to the draft, Rubio's people opined the benefits of a major market, citing more money from endorsements and an easier process of coming up with the package to release him from the pricey buyout.

Kahn has done everything he possibly can to creatively raise the cash for the monster buyout and going so far as to promise exhibition games against DKV Joventut, what is now Rubio's former Spanish team.

It didn't work. That team turned down the offer, instead agreeing on the buyout from Barcelona, keeping the teenager in the "land of paella" for the foreseeable future.

But wait.

According to StarTribune.com, an NBA source claims the New York Knicks, who wanted Rubio to begin with (they offered their No. 8 pick and Wilson Chandler for the fifth pick back on draft day) are back in possible contention, or at least discussions, regarding the teen joining their team.

They don't have an abundance of draft picks, meaning their only trade bait is un-signed David Lee, who has said he may not come to camp if a deal can't be done.

Lee is a good player, but Al Jefferson (who says his knee will be ready for the season) and Kevin Love occupy the minutes at power forward. If the T-Wolves did acquire him, Lee might be used to acquire someone else from someplace else.

Could the best current European-American play the "three"? I'm kidding.

Is Lee worthy compensation for what could be a future HOFer? The possibility Rubio proves "all hype" has to figure into the decision. His trade value could be at its highest right now.

For Kahn and the organization, it comes down to not only whether they believe he is worth waiting for, but also realistically confronting the possibility that Rubio would rather play NBA hoops somewhere other than Minneapolis.

The Minnesota Timberwolves find themselves at an interesting fork in the road, and judging by June’s draft in which they took point guards with both the fifth and the sixth picks, one they anticipated all along.

If you haven’t heard, Spanish teen-ager Ricky Rubio (AKA “Mozart”) has signed a deal with Barcelona that could keep him in Spain and out of the NBA for the next two seasons.

He could wait a couple years for Rubio to join the squad, which might not be the worst thing in the world. He won’t turn 19 until late October. In a couple years with more experience under his belt, he’d likely be in a better spot both physically and in terms of maturity to live up to the hype.

If Rubio is destined to be an NBA star, the realization of that fate seems more likely later than now.

But is this more a question of better location (than the land of 10,000 lakes) leading to bigger dollars?

Prior to the draft, Rubio’s people opined the benefits of a major market, citing more money from endorsements and an easier process of coming up with the package to release him from the pricey buyout.

Kahn has done everything he possibly can to creatively raise the cash for the monster buyout and going so far as to promise exhibition games against DKV Joventut, what is now Rubio’s former Spanish team.

It didn’t work. That team turned down the offer, instead agreeing on the buyout from Barcelona, keeping the teenager in the “land of paella” for the foreseeable future.
